But research into natural products in the pharmaceutical industry has declined during the past two decades. Consequently, natural products are significantly underrepresented in current small molecule libraries. This bias is mainly due to issues related to the intrinsic challenges of natural products and the lack of compatibility of traditional natural-product extract libraries with high-throughput screening. Therefore, pharmaceutical companies emphasize high-throughput screening of combinatorial libraries, rather than natural product libraries. But accumulated data show that synthetic libraries fail to deliver their promises and that natural products remain the best source of drugs and drug leads.

The facility is equipped with LC-MS and analytic HPLC to document the identity of natural products, RapidTrace SPE workstation from Biotage for solid phase extraction. The facility is also equipped with multiple Rotary Evaporators and preparative HPLC, Labconco Free Zone Freeze Dryer, Branson Sonication Water Bath and various standard dry baths from VWR Scientific and Grant, Matrix expandable multichannel pipettes from Thermo Scientific and Eppendorf Repeater Stream pipettes.

The natural product library core facility at MBICR is committed to constructing the most extensive natural products library in the world to meet the current high-throughput screening needs. Upon completion of the library, the core facility will provide world-wide scientists an unprecedented chemical diversity to screen for drug leads and interrogate biological processes.
