Cancer Stem Cells

Analogous to normal tissue stem cells, CSCs are believed to engender tumors through self-renewal and subsequent differentiation into multiple cell types that are not tumorigenic. It has been proposed that tumor relapse after treatment might reflect that existing cancer therapies kill nontumorigenic population, as opposed to CSCs in the tumor mass. Therefore, development of therapies targeting CSCs holds great promise for effective and long-lasting cancer treatment. Our scientists are studying CSCs in a variety of cancers with a particular focus on discovering the role of these cells in tumor relapse and drug resistance.
